Elementary-level English

Candidates who receive scores in the 50s and 60s will usually need further ESL support to qualify for college/university entrance or for professional certification.

Low 60s

Low intermediate level

High 60s

Advanced elementary level

Low 70s

Intermediate: Some colleges will accept students with intermediate English skills on a part-time basis.

High 70s

Advanced intermediate: Many professional associations require at least advanced-intermediate English skills for professional certification in North America. Requirements vary depending on your profession.

80s

Advanced level: Most universities want students who have advanced English skills, but requirements may vary depending on a student’s field and level of study.

90s

Comparable to educated adult native English speakers: Teachers, including ESL teachers, usually require this skill level in order to model excellent English for their students.
